Auch diesjahr in den Rauhnächten zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr : Die Sprachbilanz in allen möglichen Varianten , wie sie von diversen Institutionen , Lexikographern , Volksumfragern festgestellt und verkündiget werden . Wie sie von Beobachtern über Monate hinweg mitstenographiert oder von Buchstabenbastlern schlicht und einfach in die Welt entlassen werden . Heute : Die offizielle | institutionelle Variante .

In|ad|ae|qu|at bemerken wir gleich vorweg : Die Ergebnisse der “offizösen” Wortsammlungen und -Wahlen sind selten ohne einen gewissen Vorbedacht im Sinne von “historischen Markern” oder ohne einen gewissen volkspädagogischen Hang zur Mahnung . “Nimm’ und lies” , wollen sie Anlass zur Sprach- und damit Selbstbesinnung geben : Sagst du’s noch oder bist du’s schon ? – Respektive : Löse dich von Wort und Sache . Im Fall der historischen Index- Vokabeln soll ein “Zeit ( un ) geist” erfasst sein , “das war 2008″ , brennen sie die Stimmungslage auf ein Lemma herunter und dem Publikum ins Hirn : “vergissmeinnicht” .

Bevor wir uns der – stets überdeterminierten – vaterländischen Muttersprache zuwenden ( und einem “gefühlten” – sic ! – Übermass sprachregulatorischer und -ideologischer Ambitionen der Sprachmacher & – erhalter ) , beginnen wir mit einer Umschau im Ango- Amerikanischen . Kulturelle und lebensweltliche Distanzen sind dazu angetan , das Referat gehörig zu erleichtern . “Languge is a Virus” : ja , aber nicht unserer . WORD OF THE YEAR – GLM : IN PLAIN ENGLISH AMERICAN

Nichts sehr originell , dafür mit globalem Anspruch hat der “Global Language Monitor” am 1. Dezember “change” , gefolgt von “bailout” und “Obamamania” als die drei Top- Wörter des Jahres 2008 deklariert . Obwohl der Sprachgebrauch “throughout the English-speaking world” untersucht worden sei , heisst es , und damit in etwa “1.58 billion speakers” inclusive Indien , China , den Philippinen sowie der EU untersucht wurde , fällt das Ergebnis mit Anspielungen auf Bankenkrach und Präsidentenwahl doch einigermassen amerikazentrisch aus . Der Blick auf die “phrases” und “names” komplettiert das Bild :

Unser in|ad|ae|qu|at|er Favorit liegt als Beispiel für Chinglish in der “Phrasen”- Liste : “Suddenness Happens” ( “Top Chinglish Phrase from the Beijing Olympics ) . Für den deutschen Sprachraum hat dies Karl Heinz Bohrer mit seiner “Plötzlichkeit” freilich längst vorweggenommen … Shift happens .

AMERICAN DIALECT SOCIETY

Die “American Dialect Society” bekennt sich immerhin offen zu ihrem Untersuchungsgegenstand und betreibt die “Word of the Year“- Recherche seit 1991 . Der CALL 4 WORDS erging am 20. November und indiziert sehr schön die Kriterien :

Pünktlich am Weihnachtstag wurde ein Vorauswahl samt Pop- Quoten bekannt gegeben:

NEW OXFORD AMERICAN DICTIONARY

In seinem Blog meldete sich allerdings auch das “New Oxford American Dictionary” ( NOAD ) bereits am 10. 11. zu| m Wort :

The 2008 Word of the Year is (drum-roll please) hypermiling.

Und zur Erklärung :

Do you keep the tires on your car properly inflated to maximize your gas mileage? Have you removed the roof rack from your vehicle to streamline the car and reduce drag? Do you turn your engine off rather than idle at long stoplights? If you said yes to any of these questions you just might be a hypermiler.

Die Öko- und Ölpreis- betonte Positiv- Vokabel liefert inmitten aller möglicher Krisen einen praktisch- ökonmischen Handlungsappell . Amerikanischer Pragmatismus eben : Soll man die Leute durch die Kür von Minus- Begriffen noch tiefer ziehen ?! -

Starjournalist William Safire passt diese Wahl im New York Times- Magazine gar nicht : In seiner Kolumne “On Language” tut er sich unter den Finalisten um und entscheidet sich klar für den Neologismus des “frugalista” ( “person who leads a frugal lifestyle, but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying second-hand, growing own produce, etc.” – NOAD ) und übersieht dabei souverän die rezente Kulturpraxis des Twitterns ( tweet – “a short message sent via the Twitter service, using a cellphone or other mobile device” – NOAD ) :

The lexies at the New Oxford American Dictionary took a deep breath this month and made public their choice for 2008’s Word of the Year: hypermiling, defined as an ‘ attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one’s car and one’s driving techniques‘. This can range from the sensible checking of tire pressures to the more esoteric driving in bare feet. In auto-crazy California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger prefers another coinage for the practice: EcoDriving, with an oh-so-with-it capital D instead of the old-fashioned hyphen.

Neither of these concocted words revs up my linguistic engine. That’s because they are news-specific … My choice for the Word of 2008 has to be attuned to the economic event writers will be dealing with in 2009: a word for the recession (which we optimists call ‘the prerecovery period‘).

Fortunately, Oxford’s neologists have provided us with their shortlist … , from which we can make our own choice of hottest word. One entry is CarrotMob, ‘a flash-mob type of gathering, in which people are invited via the Net to all support and reward a local small ethical business by patronizing it at the same time‘ [ NOAD ] . Sorry, that’s too specialized. Another is topless meeting, ‘in which the participants are barred from using their laptops, BlackBerries, cellphones, etc.‘ [ NOAD ] . Nope; that conjures an image in my mind of a board meeting with all participants stripped to the waist, sitting around in minikinis, causing some sexist executives to call for a smoked-glass ceiling.

But wait: one entry on the Oxford shortlist rings my bell, with its rich etymology, current utility and potential staying power well beyond the nonce. It is frugalista, defined as ‘a person who lives a frugal lifestyle but stays fashionable and healthy by swapping clothes, buying secondhand, growing own produce, etc.‘ [ NOAD ]. This could become the nom de guerre of the ‘recession warrior‘. ( NYTM)

Auch hier : Think positive , friss minder & nage am eleganten Begriff oder ( wie Fiona ) an Selbstgebackenem . Kein Besuch also mehr beim teuren Barista … , wo der postfordistisch ausgelagerte “moofer” aushängt ( “a mobile out of office worker – ie. someone who works away from a fixed workplace, via Blackberry / laptop / wi-fi etc.” [ NOAD ] ) . Solche prekäre Arbeit sieht freilich nicht immer nach “im Schweisse des Angesichts” erbrachte Leistung aus und ist nach aussen hin leicht mit der “staycation” zu verwechseln ( “vacation taken at or near one’s home, taking day trips, etc.” ) .

Wer , fragen wir in|ad|ae|qu|at , hat mit dem solcherweise moofig verdienten Geld denn heute noch das Kapital für eine Urlaubsreise ?! – Sicher keiner unter den zahlreichen abgebauten oder downgegradeten ( freien ) Journalisten , welche 2008 hervorgebracht hat …

Bleibt noch der Befund von Merriam- Webster , dem andern Big Player unter dem amerikanischen Lexikographen und – Gehen Sie zurück zu START – landen bei der unvermeidlichen ökonomischen Auslöse des US- Bankwesens ( siehe 700 Millionen und wie viel das praktisch ist ) . “With politics and the economy foremost on the minds of many” , gibt man kund,

Einen Ausreisser aus dem Immergleichen bieten die Leute von Webster’s New World Dictionary Mit dem Webster- Wort des Jahres wird ein soziale Praxis aus dem Web- Leben benannt , welche längst die ursprünglich unschuldigen Konnotationen von Selbstdarstellug und Connecten verloren hat , ja Manchem nachgerade lebenslang und -wirklich fatalen Image- Schaden eintragen kann . Am 1. 12. verkündet das Weblog des Hauses : Word of the Year 2008 : Overshare

overshare (verb): to divulge excessive personal information, as in a blog or broadcast interview, prompting reactions ranging from alarmed discomfort to approval.

Das freimütige Ausstreuen persönlicher Daten im Netz – siehe Gawkers böses Digestium der “Compulsive Oversharers of the Internet” – interessiert die Lexikographen in seiner kategorialen Doppelfunktion von Verb und Nomen ebenso wie als Marker für eine spezifische kommunikative Praxis :

It’s also a word that is rather slip-slippery, chameleon-like. Some people use it disparagingly; they don’t like oversharing. Others think oversharing is good and that one must give full disclosure of one’s inner life. Sometimes there is a generational shift in the way people look at this practice and therefore view the word. We found that very interesting.

Now is overshare in the dictionary? No. Typically words chosen as Word of the Year are parts of emerging English. They’re not yet in. They don’t have a track record of usage.
