Seit gestern und bis inclusive Freitag geht in Wien ein Kybernetik- Gipfeltreffen über die Bühne : Das “19th European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research” ( EMCSR 2008 ) erkundet mittels 112 Vorträgen innerhalb von 12 Symposien Themenbereiche zwischen AI , Systemforschung und -Theorie , Bio- und Soziokybernetik , Kognitionswissenschaft und Managementheorie . Hier die Playlist :

Impulsgebend und mitorganisierend ist - neben der Österreichische Studiengesellschaft für Kybernetik ( ÖSGK | Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies ) und der International Federation for Systems Research - selbstverständlich das Wiener Institut für Medizinische Kybernetik und Artificial Intelligence , mit dessen Leiter , Robert Trappl wir vor Jahren einmal ausführlich zu Recherchezwecken über “Sprechmaschinen” plaudern durften …. im Fachjargon : “intelligente Software- Agenten” ( = “wie Computer geschriebene oder gesprochene Sprache verstehen , verarbeiten und äussern” , so Trappl gegenüber ORF- Science ) . |||

Da nicht nur die kybernetische Idee sich treu bleibt ( trotz mannigfaltiger Ausfaltungen ) , sondern auch wir unseren alten Themen , würden wir klar für The Cybernetics of Cybernetics : Cybernetics , Interaction and Conversation optieren . Hier nur einige Binnenthemen :

Aber, hach , die Zeit …. flieht halt auch systemimmanent . Zu fragen wäre allerdings , ob Italo Calvinos poetologischen Überlegungen , die unter dem deutschen Titel “Kybernetik und Gespenster” erschienen sind und als Brevier der Postmo(r)derne gelten , nicht viel eher auf die Ideen des “Ouvroir de Littérature potentielle” ( Oulipo ) zurückzuführen sind als auf die der Kybernetik . Was aber wäre , bestünde hierin gar kein Widerspruch ? |||

Jetzt aber zum herrlichen Bildmotiv unserer heutigen Ausgabe und Was dahinter steckt . Die 1962 erschienene LP “Music From Mathematics” wurde von Teilnehmern des 365- Days- Project aus dem Archiv gekramt . Zwei Jahre lang - 2003 und 2007 - konnte man auf Initiative des Freien Radios WFMU-FM Schönes und Krach , Destruktives und Poesie , und was sonst je akustisch gedieh einer grösseren Community vorstellen . Sämtliche Schätze des Projekts wurden dankenswert @ UBUWEB gesammelt .

Ein besonders schönes Stück ist uns nun per “Zufall” unter die Finger geraten . Und zwar die via I.B.M. 7090 generierte “Music From Mathematics” . Aber lassen wir den Dejay Phil Clark lieber selbst über seinen phantastischen Fund erzählen :

Music From Mathematics was an album of early electronic music, programmed by the boffins (very likely in authentic period white coats and glasses) at Bell Laboratories way back in the early 1960s, using the then-new IBM 7090 computer and an “electronic to sound transducer”. The music on the album, about half of which is included here, is a mixture of strange, other-worldly blips, rushing white noise, tootly reworkings of classical pieces and a marvellous period “singing computer” version of “A Bicycle Made For Two” …. . Full marks to Decca Records for releasing the record - remember that in 1962, these alien sounds would have been totally new, and suitably space-age in their sound.

It’s also interesting to think about the computer technology used to create the record, especially when viewed from forty years on. A little web research revealrs that the IBM 7090 series was the company’s first commercial solid-state (transistorised) computer, its predecessor the 700 series having been based around vacuum tube technology (imagine running a tube-based computer! fantastic!). The new system was of course a huge piece of machinery, requiring its own air-conditioned computer room and a team of technicians to operate it. It had a whole 32KB of core store memory, I/O would usually have been through punched cards or paper tape (no display screen, of course) and yes, it featured lots of suitably impressive flashing lights and whirring tape drives too - see the film “Dr Strangelove” and admire the same technology in action.
